Community Notification October 21, 2013 Off Campus Crime

 Incident 1

On Monday morning, October 21, 2013, the Charleston City Police Department received a report of a sexual assault occurring in an apartment in the area of King Street and Burns Lane Charleston, SC. The victim reported she had been with a group of friends at an alcohol establishment consuming alcohol. The group then left the establishment and went to the apartment where they continued to consume alcohol. The victim stated she woke up to the suspect, one of the friends of the victim, sexually assaulting her. The Charleston City Police Department is currently investigating this offense (OCA 13-17079). The victim is not a College of Charleston student. No additional information is available at this time.

Incident 2

On Monday, October 21, 2013, the College of Charleston Department of Public Safety received a report of a sexual assault occurring On October 19, 2013, in an parking area in downtown Charleston, SC. The victim reported she had been with friends at an off campus apartment consuming alcohol. The victim left the apartment with the suspect who is an acquaintance. The victim and the suspect walked off campus to a parked vehicle and got into the vehicle which is where the alleged sexual assault occurred. The victim did not know where the vehicle was parked at the time. Both the victim and the suspect are College of Charleston students. This report is being investigated by SLED with the assistance of the Department of Public Safety. (OCA 2013-C-0516) No additional information is available at this time.

Community Notification September 6, 2013 Off Campus Crime

Incident

On Friday morning, September 6, 2013, at approximately 2:45 am, a female victim (not a CofC student) was sexually assaulted inside an apartment in the area of King and Society Streets, Charleston, SC. The suspect is alleged to be a White Male, approximately 25 years of age, 5’8” with a medium build, short brown hair, pointy nose.

The City of Charleston Police are investigating the reported crime. No additional information is available at this time.

Community Notification: July 13, 2013

The Department of Public Safety is informing the College of Charleston campus community of a series of events that occurred on and off-campus. It is not known at this time if these events are related. Students, Faculty and Staff are cautioned to be mindful of their surroundings. Walk in groups and in well lighted areas; avoid less traveled short cuts. College of Charleston Department of Public Safety Officers are available for campus escorts. Location: St. Philip Street between Warren and Radcliff Streets
Suspect Description: Asian male, 30-40 years of age, approximately 5’6” - 5'7", stubby black hair, no facial hair, white tee shirt, khaki pants, brown casual shoes
Suspect Vehicle: Small white SUV with beige interior, 4 doors, unknown South Carolina tag
Incident Description: The above described suspect first approached the victim and her friend and asked if they needed a taxi as they were walking north on St. Philip St. near Vanderhorst St. After the girlfriend went home, the suspect approached the victim, this time on foot, from behind in the area . He grabbed her and sexually assaulted her while holding her on the ground. When he was finished the suspect fled north on St. Philip Street. City of Charleston Police responded to the scene. The City police are currently investigating this incident.

Location: Between Duncan and Vanderhorst Streets on Coming Street
Suspect Description: White male, blue athletic shorts, brown shoes, long sleeved black or dark blue shirt
Incident Description: The above described suspect stepped into the sidewalk a short distance away from the victim directly in her path. Several times, the suspect would stand into a driveway as if observing her approach until she reached the area where he was standing. As the victim walked past the suspect she saw that he had a white t-shirt wrapped around his face and that he was masturbating. Charleston City Police Department responded and took report # 1310528.

On and Off Campus Crime Occurrences:

Reference: Item June 4, 2013 approximately 9:42am
Location: Pitt and Bull Streets and in the area of Bull Street between Coming and Pitt Streets
Suspect Description: White male, approximately 5’10”, dirty blonde hair
Incident Description: The above described suspect exposed himself to the victim while she was in the area of Pitt and Bull Streets. The victim ran from the suspect to activate the Call Box in the area of 18 Bull Street. It was near this location that the suspect pulled the victim to the ground. The victim was able to fight off the suspect and he was last seen running from the area west on Bull Street. Both City of Charleston Police and College of Charleston Public Safety Officers responded to the scene. The City police are currently investigating this incident as an assault.

Suspects’ Description:
None available. Victim thinks she may have seen the suspect in her neighborhood before.
Incident Description: An individual not known to the victim tied to sexually assault her outside her home. She fought off the attacker and called the Charleston City Police Department.

Location: Intersection of Coming Street and the Crosstown, Charleston, SC
Suspect Description: Black male, college age to late 20s, 1 to 2 day old razor stubble, athletic build; red/maroon car with large rims
Incident Description:The victim was walking at the intersection of the Crosstown and Coming Street when a car stopped and the suspect asked her if she needed a ride. The victim answered "no" and continued walking. At that time, the suspect got out of the vehicle, grabbed the victim's arm and attempted to force her into the vehicle. The victim was able to get away without injury and called the Charleston City Police Department.

Location: Alleyway on King Street, Charleston, SC - near campus
Suspect Description: White male, approximately 33 years of age, 5'10" and 190 lbs, long hair
Incident Description: The suspect grabbed the victim and attempted to pull her down an alley on King Street, near the College of Charleston Campus. The victim was not going to call the police until her friends advised her that she should. Both CofC Public Safety Officers and Charleston City Police Officers responded to Berry Residence Hall to speak with the victim.

Location: St. Philip and Liberty Streets, Charleston, SC
Suspect Description: Three unknown males, grey in color van
Incident Description: The victim was walking in the area of St. Philip and Liberty Streets when a grey in color van stopped and three male subjects got out and yelled at her. The victim did not know what they were yelling because she was listening to audio with ear buds in her ears. The victim felt threatened and ran away and called the Charleston City Police Department.

Location: Parking Lot 99 St. Philip Street (on Vanderhorst Street side of building)
Suspect Description: Suspect – White male, maroon sweatshirt
Incident Description: The victim was approached by the suspect who dragged her to the rear of the parking lot in a possible attempt to sexually assault her. The victim was able to fight off the suspect, who ran off in an unknown direction. Charleston City Police responded to the scene. The victim declined to make a police report.

COMMUNITY NOTIFICATION Off Campus Crime

Approximately 12:40PM on 23 March 2013
Location: 41 Coming Street, Charleston, SC
Suspects’ Description: Suspect #1 (apprehended) – Black male, approximately 18 years of age, approximately 5’6” tall, wearing a green running suit 
Suspect #2 (still at large) – Black male, 5’6” – 5’8” tall, thin build, wearing an oversized gray or black “hoodie” *** POSSIBLY ARMED ***Incident Description: The suspects entered #41 Coming Street, Charleston, SC and proceeded to the second floor where they encountered five (5) male student victims.  Suspect #1 brandished a firearm in the direction of one victim and the other victims came to his defense.  The suspects fled the house.  Suspect #1 was apprehended and Suspect #2 is still at large.Charleston City Police Department is actively conducting an investigation into this offense. Do not attempt to apprehend the suspect.  

Incident: The Department of Public Safety is informing the College of Charleston Campus community of an off-campus crime. Reference: Robbery (Charleston City Police Department classified as Larceny Case # 1303577) Approximately 4:45PM to 4:57Pm on 6 March 2013 Location: Wentworth and St. Philip Street Suspects’ Description: Suspect #1 – White male, short black hair, moustache, wearing a dark green jacket with hood, light blue jeans, and white tennis shoes

Incident Description: The victim was approached by an unknown suspect who said, “Give me the bags.”  The victim asked, “What?”  At that point, the suspect said, “Give me the bags, NOW!”  The victim gave over the bags and the suspect fled west on Wentworth Street.  The bags were shopping bags from Apple and Sunglass Hut, containing several electronics, peripherals, and sunglasses.  At no point did the suspect use or threaten to use force.

On and Off-Campus Alert

The Department of Public Safety is informing the College of Charleston Campus community of the following activity occurring on and off-campus.

Since approximately February 1, 2013, individuals have been on campus and in the surrounding areas soliciting sales of magazines.  In one instance, which occurred off campus and was reported to the Charleston Police Department by a College of Charleston student, they may have been responsible for the theft of a motor vehicle, as well as a purse, wallet, credit cards and cash.  In another incident, the subjects gained entry to a secured residence hall, and obtained information for a debit card, charging a total of $110 to the card, before the student realized she was the possible victim of fraud and reported this activity to the College of Charleston Department of Public Safety.  

The campus community is being advised to be alert to these individuals being in the area.  On campus residents should not let anyone they do not know and who don’t have a legitimate purpose for being there, into residence halls; particularly those that do not have staffed front desks.  Off campus residents should be cautious of opening their door to strangers, and should always lock their doors, whether they are home or not.  If you come in contact with, or observe these salespersons on, or in the area of, the College of Charleston campus, please notify the Department of Public Safety or the City of Charleston Police Department.
